The Prom is one of the most important nights of your life, and definitely a milestone to every teenager. You spend tons of your parents money, your own savings, and time prepping and planning for the event, wanting to look nothing but your best. With all of the effort you put into Prom, it’s bittersweet when it’s over and the only way to keep your recollections are in photos.

It’s important to get all aspects and pieces of your Prom night incorporated into your albums, as there really is nothing you want to forget. From the earliest moments you often overlook, such as getting ready—it’s fun to see at them in retrospect with the big “makeover” that takes place. When taking your Prom photos, be sure to think of what you’d like to do with them in the future. Be sure to get everything you need early, leaving anything to the last minute is never a good thing, and we all want our pictures of Prom to be flawless. Keeping a book chronicling the night from beginning to end is a great way of re-living the night you wish never ended. Documenting the whole process, from applying makeup to the “walk down the stairs” is an amusing way to remember the moments that go by so quickly. Parents generally want to bombard their children with flashes and the insistence to “smile!” which can seem annoying, but trust us, you’ll be happy when it’s the next day or even months later, and you reminisce.

Many Prom-goers now have newly-traditional “Pre-Prom Parties” where friends gather together with their parents, all with the purpose of picture-taking. With everyone dressed up and excited for the party they’re about to embark on, the energy is high, makeup is done, hair is perfected. Getting pictures with your friends and families together are always cherished, and with enough people around, it’s easy to get everyone included.

The Prom itself is the highlight of the night, of course, and you’ll want to make sure you have enough snapshots of it. With the ever-popular use of digital cameras, many students only carry one around with them, but it is a good idea to bring a disposable one also just in case of a low battery or you simply don’t want to risk losing an expensive piece of equipment. Many schools hire professional photographers to capture you and your date as you walk in, and sometimes you can get group shots also. This is a good way to get a different type of photo, with the ability to order as many as you’d like and parents frequently use these as mementos.

Most people still have the keepsakes from their Prom years after the special night, often with mixed feelings of regret, nostalgia, and laughter. With Prom now being nearly equivalent to a wedding in terms of preparation and significance, hundreds of pictures are taken, edited, and saved to preserve the memories. Technology now makes it possible for many people to create online albums, easily accessible and fun to share. When you and your friends all post your pictures, you can contribute and add pictures from all different cameras and collections. Everyone captures moments differently, and loading your own online makes your photo albums even better, while showing the world what you did on Prom night.

Once the night has ended, even the lights of the after-parties have been turned on, and you only have your pictures left. You can print out the ones posted online, and make scrapbooks, photo albums, and immortalize the shots in frames. When keeping a book or album, a great way to remember all that happened is by journaling the events. Leave comments next to photos with anecdotes of the night, and nothing will be left out. You can be crafty with frames purchased at stores; decorating is a fun activity you can do with friends while you look through Prom pictures, and maybe give one to your date!

Another idea that has been gaining popularity is sending out Prom Announcements. This is a unique and special way to show those you love how terrific you and your date looked on Prom—or even you and your whole group of friends! These are wonderful souvenirs to keep for yourself, as well as to send relatives far away who didn’t get to see you on your big night. You can make your own, by buying simple blank cards at any store, or from scratch. Many stationary and invitation designers are now offering Prom Announcements, making it even easier for you.

Aside from Prom, many Senior students send out Graduation Announcements. Instead of putting a picture of yourself in the cap and gown, some students have used Prom photos instead. If you have a really great photo you want to show off, and you’re already planning on sending out a Graduation Announcement, this is perfect.

Since you have been looking forward to your Prom for years, and it’s obvious that everyone is going to see photos from it, it’s a smart idea to have a mirror on you at all times. From makeup touch ups to checking out your winning smile, you don’t want anything to ruin perfectly good photos.

Your Prom is guaranteed to make lasting memories, and although you want pictures to restore them, don’t let the thought of taking photos make you forget to have fun. You’ll be looking great, having fun, and surrounded by your friends, and the good time will happen on its own. Of course it’s great to have tons of pictures filling albums and being shown to everyone, but it’s more important to take pleasure in your Prom and not get stressed out over it.

Just be sure to look your best, because you know you’ll be in at least one picture!

Prom Photos—Checklist

Aside from the “formal” photograph that many of us take at the Prom, there are plenty of memories made during the night that we want to keep fresh through pictures. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the night and the excitement that we actually forget to take our cameras out and the night seems as if it will never end. It is important to live in the moment and enjoy yourself during the Prom, but keep in mind that the next day and in the future, you will want to look back and reminisce.

With this thought, there are a few “standard” ideas for your photos that you will want to capture to re-live your Prom night:

  • Getting ready: Bring a camera to the hair and/or nail salon, and take photos of you and your friends during the “before” stages, as well as doing your makeup. A lot of girls get ready together, and the memories are priceless—be sure you capture them!
  • "Walking down the stairs" -- This is always a favorite of parents. While it will take more than one camera, you may want to get not just a picture of your daughter walking down the stairs, but also a picture of the look on her date's face (as long as the two of them don't mind the paparazzi effect).
  • Photos of the boutonniere and corsage being pinned on/or put on are monumental in terms of the Prom.
  • Pictures with Parents are always nice ways to incorporate your family into the son or daughter’s special night. With many students now having Pre-Prom parties at friends’ houses, there are plenty of people around to capture the Prom partier and his or her family.
  • Friends: Getting the entire “group” together at the Pre-Prom party is an essential keepsake. This is a night shared with friends, and often the favorite picture of many.
  • Driving off in car/limousine: you want to remember going to the Prom in style!
  • A picture of the restaurant or club of the after party: This is increasingly become the biggest part of the night, often even more of a focus than the actual Prom. You don’t want to get so distracted that you don’t get a shot of the venue!
  • Plenty of photos of you and your date dancing: What kind of Prom album would it be if you don’t have any of these?!
  • And a prom picture checklist wouldn't be complete without a reminder about your prom royalty – the prom king and queen!

Be sure that you have plenty of film on hand, even as a backup to a digital camera. There is no part of Prom that you’ll want to forget, and although it will seem at the time that everything is memorable, time will erase images from our memories. This is a remarkable time in all of our lives, so be sure you don’t leave any second of it out!
