Five Things Not to Do When Picking a Prom Dress

By: Sofia Blum

Often times when girls are getting ready for prom season they ask themselves, should the dress I buy be low cut, flashy, slinky, or sexy? Having an image of your dress in your mind that depicts the personality you want to portray for the night is important. Maybe you are shy, and the dress you plan on wearing will surprise everyone and cause a WOW factor. Maybe you were an ugly duckling, and you want to wear something sexy and flashy to show off your now beautiful assets. No matter what route you decide to take with your gown, remember pick the right dress for you, work with what you have already by incorporating some old things you have at home, and don't forget color choice is everything!

If you are thinking about prom, most likely it is getting closer to Spring, where the air is nice and warm, the birds are chirping, and the sun is shining. No body wants to wear a dress that was hanging in their closet collecting dust, but mom says, "You don't need to buy a new dress, the one from last year is fine." So what is a girl to do?

First off, don't make it fit. Regardless if you are shopping for a new dress, or trying to squeeze into the old one hanging in your closet, if it doesn't fit, don't bother with it. You will pay a bigger price at prom, if the dress is too small and rips, or if it is way to long and you end up tripping over it. If you don't have the money for something drop dead gorgeous try looking around for inspiration. You'd be surprised at what stylish retro looks are in your mother's closet.

Ok, so you think your Calista Flockhart, and your curvaceous body can pull off a dress that even a double zero can't, well I got some news for you. Don't dress like a twig if you aren't one. If you've actually got a figure, yes we are talking about all you voluptuous girls out there, don't go for the straight look, you'll look like an idiot. Go for something to accent your curves! Be yourself and be proud of what your mama gave ya!

I cannot stress how important color is when picking a dress. It can literally make or break you. Nobody wants to see a girl wearing a white dress that reveals her cellulite. Don't make a bad color choice. Pick the right color. Have you ever looked over, and saw the sickly looking pale girl in the yellow dress? Well, that goes to show you, PICK THE RIGHT COLOR FOR YOUR SKIN, ok? You don't have a choice when it comes to your skin color, but you definitely have a choice in picking the dress color. So if you are pale, try choosing medium tones for a dress, like browns, reds, dark blues, or even silver or grey. If you are of medium complexion, choose a light colored dress, like purple, light blue, yellow, or green. For all you girls that have a natural dark glow, wearing neon colors makes you stand out, so try wearing, pinks, yellows, white, and electric blue. Just remember if you are dark skinned, watch out for the really black, blue, purple fad, it'll make you look like a raccoon.

Another important no no not to forget when picking your prom dress is length makes it happen. Make sure you get a dress that fits your height. You don't want to get something too short that will allow everyone to see your ankles, nor do you want something way to long that will cause you to trip. If you're short, a dress that drags the floor makes you look ten times shorter and pudgier than you really are. Same applies to whether you are tall. If you are well in doubt in length make sure your dress covers those ankles. To have a perfectly fit dress, the length of the gown should cover most of your shoe. The only areas showing should be the front part of the toe, and the lower part of the heel.

Everyone needs to look stylish for their big night right? So don't forget to accessorize. No one wants to arrive at prom and see your shoe heel plastered off, your purse all raggedy. Accessories are just as important as the outfit itself. If you can't afford a new pair of shoes or a new purse, and the old one is in terrible condition, try going to a craft store and getting a few supplies to give your worn out accessories a face lift. Fix up an everyday purse with buttons or jewels. Repair those old shoes with some stick on diamonds. Nobody said you have to get rid of them, just give them an upgrade, that all.

With the fashion no no's out of the way, you can now peacefully walk through those prom doors feeling confident, sexy, and stylish, but most importantly don't forget to have fun!
